ST. PETERS--Soualiga Capoeira successfully concluded its 16th annual Graduation Ceremony, from August 22-24.
The organization marked nearly two decades of empowering St. Maarten's youth through the dynamic Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira.
The ceremony was also a reunion, as 11 committed graduates were joined by original members from the group's founding era of 2002-2012.
The organization's leader, Jacques Heemskerk, noted, "Seeing our first-era Capoeiristas return to celebrate alongside our newest graduates was deeply moving. It demonstrated the lasting bonds forged through Capoeira and the enduring impact of our community across generations."
The celebration featured intensive workshops and intimate sharing sessions that deepened the participants' connection to their heritage.
During the event, participants were able to tap into mindfulness with Yoga by Ludmila de Weever, and Mestre Amen provided an Afro-Brazilian dance workshop for local dancers that attended. This holistic approach ensures that students learn not just kicks and flips, they also learn Portuguese, African rhythms, Brazilian history and other types of arts.
The organization expressed heartfelt gratitude to this year's partners: Brooks and Associates: Attorneys at Law, The Port St. Maarten, SXM Optical, Amsterdam Cheese and Liquor Store, Seaview Beach Hotel, T-Shirt Maxx, and The St. Maarten Academy.
The ceremony was also attended by St. Maarten Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot and Member of Parliament Christopher Wever.
MP Sarah Wescot said "It was a pleasure watching these youngsters mesmerized by their acclaimed teachers and working so hard on their own achievements. While watching them was inspiring on its own, what I love about Capoeira is the discipline. All throughout, I kept reminding myself how lucky our kids are to have this training and this coaching in life-long skills that they can carry with them forever."MP Christopher Wever: "The MP extends congratulations to all students and organizers involved in the recent Capoeira belt ceremony held in August 2025. The MP emphasizes the positive impact that a single person can have on the community, highlighting how the art form of Capoeira teaches discipline and provides a positive outlet for youth. The MP concludes by expressing hope for the continued growth and success of the organization."
