PHILIPSBURG--Altair, from St. Barths, was crowned champion of the 9th edition of the Budget Marine Wahoo tournament Sunday. Altair jumped out to an early lead landing 11 wahoo for a total of 427.2 pounds of fish, Saturday. Sunday Altair only added four more wahoo to the tally for 528.2 pounds.
This year’s 20 boats from Nevis, St. Kitts, Saba, St. Croix, St. Barths, St. Martin and St. Maarten participated in the tournament.
Tahla’O from St. Barths caught nine wahoo for 281 pounds of wahoo to take second place Saturday.
Sunday the first boat to the scales was Turn and Burn from St. Croix with a total of 15 wahoo, after not being able to fish on day 1 due to engine failure. Their day 2 catch of 360lbs catapulted them into second place overall.
Blue Crush from Saba showed up to the docks with a whopping wahoo weighing in at 65.9 lbs, caught by their junior angler.
A few minutes later defending champions Tahal'O came to docks and started offloading fish, in total 11 wahoo and 1 yellow fin tuna, with their day 1 and day 2 catches propelling them to second place with 503.1 pounds of fish. Third place went to Blue Crush from Saba just 0.50 pounds behind Tahal’o.
Jamaal Klaber on Blue Crush from Saba with 46.9lbs Wahoo was named Best Junior Angler. Other prizes were Best Female Angler, Typhanie Bosseur on Prowler from St. Maarten; Largest Mahi mahi, Tahla’O at 23.6 lbs; Largest Tuna, Taotira from St. Barths 40.2 lbs and Largest Kingfish, Pinche Slow Pay from St. Kitts 24.2 lbs.
