NASSAU, The Bahamas--The government is in the process of setting up temporary housing in the form of dome structures for people returning to Abaco in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said on Wednesday.
Minnis said the project, which he referred to as the Family Relief Center, which will be next to the Spring City subdivision, will cost about US $6.4 million.
“The Family Relief Center will comprise 250 dome structures that will include plumbing, drainage, a sewer system and electricity,” he said.
“And each dome can accommodate between two and five individuals.”
He added, “The land is being prepared and trenching begins this week. Materials for the infrastructure work are scheduled to arrive on Abaco next week.”
Minnis said temporary housing is also being arranged for government workers on Abaco.
The housing will be comprised of 100 RV (recreational vehicle) trailers, which will accommodate 300 “critical government personnel, who will play an essential role in reconstruction and recovery.”
Dorian levelled parts of Abaco and Grand Bahama after it made landfall as the strongest storm on record to ever make landfall in the region.
With sustained winds up to 185 miles per hour and gusts over 220 miles per hour, as well as storm surges in excess of 20 feet, Dorian left thousands homeless.
Marsh Harbour, Abaco’s capital and centre of commerce, was decimated. Hundreds of storm survivors remain in shelters on New Providence. Thousands of others are scattered across and outside the country.
Many survivors who have spoken with The Nassau Guardian have expressed their desire to return home, even if it will be to live in temporary housing. ~ The Nassau Guardian ~
