Dear Editor,
In your paper of today, page 9 you, have an article about a new law firm being established. As a devout believer having a big Seventh Day Adventist church here in St. Maarten, I continue to argue my point about democracy here on the Island, and also about the breakdown of the rule of Law.
As I continue to make my point, lawyers and doctors on small islands like St. Maarten are politicians, liable to be held accountable to their constituents for any decisions they make. For years in ignorance it has been done as they are doing now. Unfortunately the country is on the verge of collapse, it has become a little Haiti.
In Antigua and St. Kitts, islands the same size as St. Maarten, doctors and lawyers are politicians. These lawyers are prostitutes, they have not taken out a loan, and take the pain of doing business on a small island with a lot of poor people.
Since St. Maarten became separate from the Netherlands in 1954, at that time it was "Curaçao en de onderhorigen." something like that. It’s unbelievable that 61 years later nothing has been changed legally for the benefit of the population. It still is lawless and the rule of law is still broken down. Why? Because my so-called educated people want "something for nothing". They are still living in the past and are blaming the Dutch for everything.
In 2010, they made St. Maarten a country and continue to blame their "slave masters" for everything wrong on this island. I continue to challenge them to look in the mirror. You are now doing the same thing to your Caribbean brothers that you have accused the Dutch of doing to you. The pot is calling the kettle black.
That is why the Bible is the answer to all the world’s ills. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I would never come or advise anyone to come to your law office. Take out a loan, start a political party then I would have some type of respect for you, even though you might be corrupt. Take risks, even though you have to tell a lot of lies to the people to get in power.
There is no perfection in this evil world, but at least you would have given it a good try. Take risks, take risks, take out a loan. Be a hero, not an outcast. It is better to die trying, than to live as an outcast. Do not forget, there is an international criminal court where innocent citizens can get their justice, for destroying their country.
