Ask the Earth and she will tell you

Dear Editor,

I recently read a letter to the editor of this newspaper from a narrow-minded brother, which brought a smile to my face.

I have known brother Snijders for as long as I can remember. We attended the same church for a number of years. He has always been a Christian, One who – unlike many – does not hesitate to speak openly about the Lord. He is someone I look up to. A rare specimen indeed. Why rare?

Ask the earth, and she will tell you. Say to her: You produce gold, silver and bronze and also iron, lead and clay, but silver is more abundant than gold and bronze than silver and iron than bronze and lead than iron and clay than lead.

Judge therefore which things are precious and desirable: those that are abundant, or those that are rare? What is plentiful is of less worth, for what is more rare is more precious.

I couldn’t help but compare brother Snijders with another Dutchman, with whom I recently had to deal with, one who loves to make fun of Christians, calling them narrow-minded and stubborn.

Here’s what these two gentlemen have in common: They are both European Dutchmen, both former teachers, both retired and both have lived and worked on St. Maarten for decades, but the similarities end there.

Brother Snijders mentioned a profound biblical truth, namely that a rather small number of people will make it to heaven (those who enter through the narrow gate and are on the narrow road that leads to life) in contrast to the many who enter through the wide gate and are on the broad road that leads to destruction.

I want to add some more biblical information that clearly confirms that the majority of souls will indeed be lost.

“The righteous are not many, but few, while the ungodly abound,” said Esdras, the prophet of God. “Now I see that the world to come will bring delight to few, but torments to many.”

“So also will the judgment be that I (God) have promised, for I will rejoice over the few who shall be saved ....... I will not grieve over the great number of those who perish.”

I hope that all the broad-minded people out there will take time out to ponder on these things.

I conclude with some sound advice someone once posted on Facebook. (Yes, good information can be found on Face Book)

“I would rather live my life believing that God exists and keep His commandments and die to find out He doesn’t exist, than to not believe in Him and then die to find out He does.
