PHILIPSBURG--In its new series of mini concerts of the Youth Orchestra of the National Institute of Arts (NIA), a quintet recently performed at the Philipsburg Jubilee Library.

After a successful first mini concert during the Governor’s New Year’s reception, where a string trio consisting of Youth Orchestra students performed under the guidance of Dennis Amajan, a saxophone quintet led by Connis Vanterpool played at the library.

Students Adelka, Enya, Angelica, Sarai and Quinell performed as soloists, in a duet and as a quintet, and played several songs such as “Fly me to the Moon”, “Au Claire de la Lune”, “Auralee”, “London Bridge”, “Doodle All Day” and “Skip to my Love”.

The mini concerts are part of the Youth Orchestra’s new approach to be more visible and to showcase their skills to the general public. The concerts also are part of a larger fundraising campaign, which includes corporate sponsorship.

The next mini concerts will be held during the Heineken Regatta in the Regatta Village on March 3 and 4, 4:00pm until 6:00pm.

The Youth Orchestra is still welcoming new students between the ages of eight and 18 years. They may contact NIA at the John Larmonie Center on Longwall Road. An audition is part of the recruitment.
