PORT--Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Sky was scheduled to make its inaugural call here today, Monday, but cancelled late last night due to inclement weather conditions. This would have been the first inaugural call of a cruise ship to St. Maarten since the passing of Hurricane Irma in September 2017.
“The first inaugural call of a vessel from a cruise line post-Irma is testament to our destination’s return to the cruise tourism market. Let us continue to welcome our guests with a smile and be courteous as we build back better our cruise product and destination,” Port St. Maarten had said on Saturday.
Viking Ocean Cruises was also the first cruise line to start commercial cruise calls to the destination post-Irma on December 4 with Viking Sea.
Viking Sky took her maiden voyage a year ago and carries 930 passengers. She has a length of 748 feet, a beam of 94.5 feet and gross tonnage of 47,800. Viking cruise passengers are usually age 55 and older and are mostly from North America and the United Kingdom.
