MARIGOT--Smoke enveloped parts of Boulevard de France (the waterfront) on Tuesday afternoon when long-closed restaurant Claude Mini Club caught on fire and burned down.

According to Gendarmerie Commandant Stephan Basso, the Gendarmerie and the Fire Brigade (Pompiers) received reports around 3:00pm that a building on Boulevard de France was on fire. Both entities responded to the emergency shortly afterward.

According to the Gendarmerie, the fire began inside the restaurant. A man and a woman were inside the building when the fire started. Both persons escaped the blaze without injury, said Basso.

Firefighters were busy trying to contain the blaze until 5:00pm, at which time authorities deemed the fire no longer a threat. According to Basso, the already-damaged restaurant was destroyed and could not be salvaged.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

Originally opened in 1969, Claude Mini Club had been closed for some time and was not reopened.
