CAY HILL--St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) had Cg. 10.1 million in uncollectible receivables and write-offs in 2025, up from Cg. 9.5 million in 2024, as the hospital continued to face challenges collecting payments from under-insured and uninsured patients.

According to SMMC’s 2025 Annual Report, the majority of the provision relates to SMMC and continues to be driven primarily by structural collection difficulties involving patients whose recovery rates remain low.

The report states that these collection challenges persist despite the hospital implementing tighter intake protocols and maintaining partnerships with debt collection agencies.

Throughout 2025, SMMC continued engaging with the Government of St. Maarten, the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor VSA, and Social and Health Insurances SZV to improve collections.

According to the report, those discussions produced incremental improvements in the pace of collections. The hospital said maintaining dialogue with the government, VSA and SZV will remain a management priority during 2026 as it continues efforts to strengthen its revenue collection process.
