Traffic lights back on, will flash from 10pm to 6am daily

The traffic lights are back in operation.

PHILIPSBURG--The traffic lights at the Prins Bernhard Bridge are functioning again, and the police department KPSM is urging motorists to be aware that the lights are now operational.

In accordance with international rules, the traffic lights will flash orange between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am daily, the police department said in a press release on Sunday.

“The public should be aware that running a red light is a punishable act in accordance with the traffic ordinance of Country St. Maarten,” it was stated in the release. “Drivers should also be aware that running (an) orange light is also considered an offence on the same level as running a red (light). But generally, there is more leeway when it comes to driving through an orange signal due to stopping being potentially dangerous.”

The lights were out of service since the passing of Hurricane Irma more than two years ago in 2017. They were put back into service around 11:00am Sunday, after a test period of about a week.
