Today is World Oral Health Day

PHILIPSBURG--Today Tuesday, March 20, is World Oral Health Day (WOHD), an international day to celebrate the benefits of a healthy mouth and to promote worldwide awareness of the issues surrounding oral health and the importance of oral hygiene.

The Health Ministry’s Collective Prevention Services (CPS) said in a press release on Monday that it is also a day for people to have fun that makes you laugh, sing and smile.

This year’s theme is “Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health.” The theme encourages people to make the connection between their oral health and their general health and well-being.

According to the World Dental Federation, about 90 per cent of the world’s population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime, many of which can be avoided.

Free community dental care will be available at the mobile dental bus at the Vineyard Office Park from 2:00 to 4:30pm today. Dentist Hilda Guevara will be volunteering her time to carry out the consultations.

CPS said, “Oral health means the health of the mouth. A healthy mouth allows you to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and convey a range of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and disease. No matter what your age – 5, 25, 65 or 85 years – oral health is vital to your general health and wellbeing.”

CPS urges the public to make use of the opportunity to get their teeth checked at the free dental consultation.

Additional information can be obtained by calling CPS at tel. 542-1122, 542-1222, 542-1322 or 542-1570.
