Statia J’Ouvert

A large crowd turned out for the Easter Morning J’Ouvert Jump-Up. Not only persons from St. Eustatius turned up to jam, but also revellers from St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba, St. Maarten, Curaçao, the Netherlands, and the United States. The J’Ouvert jamming started at 4:00 at the Monument near the Catholic Church and ended at NuStar/Statia Terminal playground, where a food sale was held. The organizers of the event, Rebels Hi-Definition Band, not only entertained the crowd during J’Ouvert Morning, but also later that same day at the beach. During the J’Ouvert Morning parade, there were two wet-down stops, one at the intersection of Sandy Road, and the other outside Salem Cemetery and Gwendoline van Putten School. Easter Monday is known for families and friends getting together for lunch and spending their Easter at the beach. For many years, tents and other structures are built up all along the waterfront.
