Evacuees disembark Winair.
ST. EUSTATIUS--St. Eustatius welcomed evacuees from St. Maarten on Tuesday. Windward Islands Airways International Winair executed the flights from monster Hurricane Irma-ravaged St. Maarten.
A total of 59 passengers were transported to St. Eustatius on three flights.
St. Maarten residents, who lost their home or had major damage, were invited by their St. Eustatius relatives to stay in their homes. Passengers included senior citizens, students, children, and handicapped persons. Some parents sent their little ones to be cared for by relatives on St. Eustatius.
Commissioner Derrick Simmons Jr. and Airport Manager Ellis Schmidt welcomed the evacuees. Personnel from the Community Care Center, Youth and Family, Police, school buses, from Mental Health Caribbean, Papaya Inn, and members of the Rights of the Child and Domestic Violence and Child Abuse assisted evacuees.
Statia Red Cross members were registering care packages Statians had ready to send relatives on St. Maarten on Winair. The packages included water, food, hygiene products and other essentials.
Statians were grateful to reunite with their loved ones as they had days not knowing their status after Irma struck St. Maarten.
