Some 100 children attended Nature Foundation’s Shark Day activity for children at Buccaneer Beach Bar. The children learned everything about sharks through games, quizzes and activities.
They also met a real scientist who talked about shark research and tagging. Twenty-three children, who were part of the “Shark and Art” workshop with Carla Templeton, honed their art skills on specialized tiles while considering sharks. Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) foundation taught children about mangroves and their importance in protecting coastlines and fish stocks. Shark Day is getting more popular every year; however, this year is the last of funding through the “Save our Sharks” project. “We hope we are able to find a way to continue funding for this great event as it is getting very famous on St. Maarten,” said Nature Foundations Project Office Melanie Meijer zu Schlochtern. Shark Week is part of the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance “Save our Sharks” project funded by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.
