Shakiya, Beau Beau amongst TelCell faces of Carnival 2017

POND ISLAND--Mobile carrier TelCell on Thursday released the faces of the persons who will be gracing the company’s colourful “I Am Carnival” posters during the upcoming Carnival season.

The persons to be featured on the posters are: two-time calypso monarch Rumari Rogers; 2016 Soca Rumble Power winner King Vers; 2016 Junior Calypso Queen Lil Sunshine; first female calypso monarch (2016) Shakiya Charles-Arrindell; well-known carnival reveller Pauline Gumbs and multiple Road March and Calypso King Leroy “Beau Beau” Brooks.
The posters will be placed on lampposts, vehicles, in the St. Maarten Festival Village and throughout the Philipsburg area. The faces are of persons whom TelCell says “play a big part” in the country’s carnival festivities.
The company said the “I Am Carnival” posters have been a very successful way of spotlighting individuals in the community who make special contributions to the annual carnival event.
“In January this year we set out to get some new faces by launching a “Who is Carnival” Facebook campaign giving everyone a chance to nominate their own important persons who they would like to see on our posters,” said TelEm Group Manager of Marketing and Sales Grisha Marten.
She said the Facebook response was “huge” and it took three members of the St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) along with eight members of TelCell’s Carnival core team to sift through the many suggestions to come up with this year’s list of faces.
“Congratulations to these wonderful advocates of our Carnival event. It’s a pleasure to let everyone know who they are by having them featured on our posters,” Marten said. She thanked TelCell customers and the public for making suggestions and coming up with “some wonderful reasons,” why they were making their particular choice of faces for the TelCell “I Am Carnival” posters.
