The Social and Economic Council SER discussed its work and challenges with Parliament on Tuesday morning. SER representatives urged Parliament to call on government to begin an immediate review of the law regulating the Council’s functioning. Broadening the scope of the Council’s work is needed to allow for a closer working relationship in issuing advices to the legislature.
At present, any advice, solicited or unsolicited by government, can only be available to Parliament after it becomes public six weeks after submission to government. Tuesday’s discussion also revealed that SER has completed its advice on the planned national health insurance (NHI) and will review a pending law amendment to extend maternity leave for mothers and grant paternity leave to fathers.
