Drivers on St. Maarten can definitely claim having earned their PhDs, but not for doctoral studies. Rather, they have gained it by becoming excellent pothole dodgers.
One area where drivers have a dangerous learning curve is at the junctions of Welfare Road with Wellington Road and Cay Bay Road, where several craters have again developed and eaten through the road surface. The position of these ravines forces drivers to either swerve dangerously our slow to a snail’s pace. The sad part is that major infrastructural works, repairs and maintenance have been done in the same location about half a dozen times in the last decade. Observers say as long as businesses and residents up the slope to the Kruythoff roundabout dump wastewater into the street, this problem will never go away. (John Halley photos)
