ST. EUSTATIUS--Charity Sam and Shirmell Wilson of St. Maarten-based Phenomenal Girls Society recently conducted a week of workshops on St. Eustatius.
Themed “Live Big,” the workshops, hosted by Daughters of the King (DOTK) focused on critical thinking object lessons, craft activities and reflection. Girls were taken through the dangers of comparison and how it adversely affects their lives and robs of their joy; self-esteem building exercises and field trips were to demonstrate how they can be more active in their society.
The field trips took the girls to the Governor’s House, the Solar Park, the Waste Management Plant and the “Made in Statia” Project.
The close-off was a banquet to which girls dressed in their finest attire and sported hats they custom designed as part of the workshop. The groups preformed dances choreographed by class teacher Ms. Sha. One dance was the “St. Martin Rhumba” in honour of the facilitators. Mothers were also part of the banquet.
DOTK director Elaine Cuvalay-Jeffries said the self-awareness sessions allowed girls to accept things about themselves that they cannot change, address the things they can, and celebrate the strengths they possess. Exposing girls to career options and fields helps them to envision themselves playing key roles in their island’s development, she added.
DOTK and Phenomenal Girls Society will continue to work together for the empowerment of girls, said the director.
