Préfecture issues new fire risk warning, restrictions

MARIGOT--In order to prevent any spontaneous outbreaks of fire during what it calls an “exceptional” drought this year the Préfecture on the authority of Préfète Anne Laubies has issued a by-law (arrêté) under the scope of preventing fires in forests, brush land and savannahs.

From now until August 31, 2015, it is forbidden for any persons in susceptible natural spaces to light any fires, to burn grass or vegetation, light fireworks, use lamps for camping, use any other combustible lamps, use mobile barbecue equipment, or any other equipment that depends on combustion.

It is also forbidden to discard cigarette butts and matches. These rules apply to natural areas susceptible to fire and to natural zones situated less than 200 metres from where roads pass through them.
