MARIGOT--The Préfecture is appealing to organisations, particularly those with experience in social and professional insertion, to submit projects to assist in the long term Sargassum weed clean-up.
The State in conjunction with the Collectivité recently signed a protocol to jointly tackle the Sargassum weed problem and created a green brigade of 20 persons who are charged with collecting weed and restoring beaches. These persons are paid by the State and Agence de L’Environment et de la Maitrise de L’Energie (ADEME).
However, in view of the unemployment situation the need now is for this team to be accompanied by a competent insertion organisation or association, under the supervision of the Collectivité, and to offer to loan equipment.
Projects should be deposited no later than August 7 to the following email addresses: This email address is being protected from spambots. Meanwhile, the Collectivité disclosed that company Société Dormoy Lewis (DSL) is in the midst of cleaning up the Bay of Cul-de-Sac, one area most affected by Sargassum weed. The work started on Saturday and is expected to be completed Wednesday, July 29.
The Sargassum weed is being stock piled in the Fish Day parking area prior to being transported to the Eco-Landfill where it will be transformed into compost.
Officials also visited Orient Bay on Sunday to plan the next clean-up there.
