ST. EUSTATIUS--A recent visit to the shores of St. Eustatius was made by 23 Polish students aboard the two-mast tall ship Frederyk Chopin. Named in honour of the Polish composer, the sailing ship is on a two-week Caribbean cruise from Szczecin on the Baltic Sea.

“It is a great island,” remarked Polish crew-trainer Arek Bednaz. “Chopin was a great composer of musical images, whereas Statia is a great collection of visual images. The monuments are brilliant and the snorkelling just fascinating.”

Seven years ago, Frederyk Chopin created world news by reporting distress through the loss of her two masts due to gales. A fishing trawler, fortunately, came to her rescue and towed the vessel into Falmouth Bay in the United Kingdom with her crew of 36 young trainees.

Bednaz does not expect a repeat performance of the trawler tow. “Our return to the Baltic Sea is expected to be gale-free.”
