PHILIPSBURG--A St. Maarten Police Force KPSM patrol was directed to W.J.A. Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) in the vicinity of Bluepoint electronics and office supplies store around 7:00pm Monday because a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

At the scene officers encountered a man lying on the ground who had been hit by a blue pickup truck with licence plate number V-2912.

According to police, the vehicle was travelling from Prins Bernhard Bridge and struck the man from behind. He had been walking toward the utilities company GEBE building.

The victim suffered lacerations to his head and a fractured hip. After being treated by personnel of the Ambulance Department, he was transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment.

The driver of the pickup truck did not sustain any injuries as a result of the accident, said police on Tuesday, adding that preliminary investigations indicated that the driver was not at fault.

The Traffic Department is still busy with the investigation.
