PHILIPSBURG--New political parties desirous of contesting the February 26 snap elections have until November 23 to register with the Electoral Council.
The Council said in a press release Monday night that new parties should submit a written application to register the party with the Electoral Council. Also to be submitted are a notarial deed containing the Articles of Association of the party; an excerpt from the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI); a statement containing the appointment of the party’s authorised representative and authorised deputy representative and application for registration of the reference which is to be placed above the list of candidates.

Failure to apply for registration by the deadline will result in the party not being able to contest the upcoming elections. Any existing political party that wishes to change the previously registered reference above their list of candidates is required to do so no later than November 23.
Parties that are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections are Helping Our People Advance Association (HOPE); One St. Maarten People Party (OSPP); People’s Progressive Alliance Association (PPA); Sint Maarten Christian Party (SMCP); St. Maarten Development Movement (SDM); Democratic Party of Sint Maarten (DP); National Alliance (NA); United People’s (UP) party and United St. Maarten (US) Party.
