Lessons learned

Nature Foundation Managing Director Tadzio Bervoets was a presenter at the Disaster and Preparedness Seminar hosted by the US State Department in Trinidad and Tobago.

Bervoets spoke about the Ecosystem and Environmental Health in the Face of Natural Disasters. Based on the Foundation’s experience responding to Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Bervoets dealt with health and safety of personnel, need for a scenario-based preparedness plan, good ecosystem data, a solid waste management plan in the event of a disaster, and the importance of including conservation management organisations in disaster preparedness and recovery teams. The Foundation, through support of the Department of State, will initiate community-based projects to increase ecosystem resiliency in the face of increasing disasters brought about by climate change. Bervoets was recommended as a presenter by the US Consul General’s office in Curaçao.
