Lagoon lovers

More than 100 volunteers cleaned up a section of Simpson Bay Lagoon of some three tonnes of garbage on Sunday.

page6b190Nature Foundation and Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) organised the activity in collaboration with Mason Chadwick’s “A Bit at a Time” initiative. Removed were wood, fiberglass, zinc, boat parts, garbage, plastics and other objects from the coastline spanning from Dinghy Dock Bar to the Causeway. Several local and international groups joined the activity including the Coast Guard and Gulliver Middle School from Miami, Florida. The students, with the support of Hollywood Casino, and ocean clean-up organization 4Ocean have participated in other clean-ups here. A number of businesses donated materials for the clean-up. The Ministry of Environment assisted with carting away the collected garbage. More clean-ups are planned by the two organisations. They also encourage residents to join the continuous clean-ups organized by Mason Chadwick.
