Joyce Hanley to launch ‘Beneath the Surface’

Joycelyn “Joyce” Hanley

POND ISLAND--Joycelyn “Joyce” Hanley will share her collection of poetry, titled Beneath the Surface, at the annual St. Martin Book Fair on Saturday, June 8, at 11:00am. The new “collection of heartfelt poems” is also illustrated by Hanley.

The launch at the University of St. Martin will include book signing and the reading of selected poetry by the author. Copies of the book will be on sale for US $20 each.

Hanley was born in Fountain Village, St. James Parish, Nevis, and has made St. Maarten her home. She developed a passion for poetry at a young age. Since then she has written numerous poems and short plays.

As a youth leader, her group recites many of her poems and has performed her plays at Easter and Christmas programmes.

Her opportunity for greater exposure came in November 2015 when she participated in the 18th Annual Eastern Caribbean Island Cultures (“Islands In Between”) Conference on the languages, literatures and cultures of the Eastern Caribbean Conference. There, she recited her poem “Remove the Rubbles and Rise”. She received a standing ovation and calls for an encore.
