MAHO--The stage was set and Carnival lovers flocked to Maho Sky Beach on Sunday evening to see what the island’s new Carnival troupe, “Island Revellers,” has up its sleeves for them for the upcoming season. Creative director Dylan Paul organised and delivered a night to remember.
The troupe will be participating in the Grand Carnival Parade this year for the first time and the response to its pieces was energetic.
De-Angelo Butler, a designer from the Bahamas, had a dream to see the streets of St. Maarten full of birds of the Caribbean. This was the vision initially when work started on the costumes last year.
Colour and bird species pheasant, peacock, hummingbird, yellowbird, flamingo, robin and macaw were showcased by the designer in four sections on Sunday. Members of St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation were on hand to see for themselves and by the looks on their faces they were impressed with the unique design.
Patrons also received a treat for being present at the launch, with potential revellers being given the chance to sign up on the spot for 50 per cent discount on any costume. Carnival lovers did not believe it until they actually signed up.
King Melody and Roxy were the special performers for the evening, complementing the Carnival atmosphere.
