Airport director remains in limbo

SIMPSON BAY--Princess Juliana International Airport SXM Managing Director Regina Labega is waiting for her contract to end in June or the appeal of her security screening to run its course before deciding her future at the airport.

Labega’s position requires a certificate of no objection from the national security service VDSM, but former Minister of General Affairs Marcel Gumbs refused to issue this based on the results of the security screening.

Minister of Tourism Irania Arrindell told The Daily Herald in an invited comment on Monday, “Regina Labega has requested a leave of absence, which was granted by the Supervisory Board of Directors of PJIA Operating Company N.V. The leave of absence with pay is until the appeal process has been completed or until the end of her service contract, which will end on June 30, whichever comes first.”

Labega was suspended with pay on November 13 and a Deputy Managing Director was appointed by the Supervisory Board. Operations Manager Larry Donker holds the two positions.
