COLE BAY--St. Dominic High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Class of 2019 students used their holiday break to work towards IB’s mission of making the world a better place for four-legged friends at Animal Hospital of St. Maarten in Cole Bay.

The students donated pet food and toys for the animals currently residing in Animal Hospital of St. Maarten.

“Our objective was to find an organisation that would require and appreciate a small, but kind donation from students of the IB Programme at St. Dominic High,” the school said in a press release on Monday.

“It’s been a tradition everywhere around to give back to the individuals of our respective communities. However, with the situation of the drastic events that occurred on our island earlier this year, the students wanted to give their attention to the sometimes-forgotten and -overlooked animals that can provide comfort to the community during times like these.”

Students used the funds raised from their first Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) fundraising event, the Classic Christmas Movie Night at the school, to invest in the gifts that were donated to Animal Hospital.

The IB Diploma Class of 2019 thanked Shelli Romney, Dr. Glen Romney and the staff of Animal Hospital of St. Maarten for accepting the donation and providing them with a private tour of the Hospital. The students hope to have made the holiday season a bit jollier for the animals that are waiting for “forever homes” and are in good care at Animal Hospital of St. Maarten.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year pre-university curriculum that has been offered at St. Dominic High School since August 2010. All students participate in CAS as part of their Diploma Programme curriculum. CAS gives students the opportunity to support their academic experience by engaging in a variety of activities that target creative and artistic expression, sports and community service.
