Heavy rains affect road users over the weekend

PHILIPSBURG--The heavy rain over the Easter weekend caused major flooding in low -lying areas. The Fire Department issued a notice on Sunday evening urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving on the road network, especially through flooded streets or along hillsides.

Part of the road at Mullet Bay near the entrance to Cupecoy (Starz Casino area) was flooded and the area next to Topper’s on Kim Sha Beach. The Fire Department rescued occupants of a vehicle who were stranded due to the flooded street on Sunday afternoon.

Another area with high water was the road between Princess Juliana International Airport SXM and Maho. Reports also indicated that there were rock-falls on Cole Bay Hill.

The Airport even closed briefly for landings during a particularly heavy downpour and an Air France flight coming from Paris was forced to go to Guadeloupe for refuelling before continuing to St. Maarten later.
