As St. Maarten braces for some effect from Tropical Storm Isaac mid-week, the question about when these scrap metal hillocks will be broken down and shipped off-island continues to loom. There is concern that some bits of metal could become projectiles in heavy winds. Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin recently called on shipping container owners to secure these to prevent them from becoming a danger to buildings and lives. In the case of the scrap metal it is government’s responsibility to secure this and safeguard the public.
