Governor reports on six week progress since Hurricane Irma

Governor Tim Foy and his wife present 100th Birthday Card to Comita Hughes.

ANGUILLA--“Six weeks on from Irma and the pace of recovery just seems to get faster by the day!” said Governor Tim Foy. “Driving and walking around, I’ve seen as many people up ladders and on roofs as on the ground. Bars and restaurants on the beaches are scenes of frantic activity as we all pull together to get Anguilla open and ready for the 2017 tourist season and to get life generally back to normal.”

He commended Anguilla Electricity Company Anglec as they continue to reconnect the island. He said that current is key and he has been working with the United Kingdom (UK) to get more help for Anglec. He also mentioned the Flow teams who this week are stringing up the data lines to get Internet up and running. He said that he has held discussions with the Minister of Infrastructure Curtis Richardson to get good access to the island from St. Martin through Simpson Bay and the Police Station at Blowing Point.

The Governor noted that there is much progress at the airport and before the end of

November there will be new lights and a temporary tower in place that are due to arrive soon. The Governor also reported that there was an inspection from Air Safety and Support International, the UK Government organisation responsible for certifying the airport so it can operate at full capacity. They were very pleased with the progress of the team including the fire crew, he noted.

“Workwise, much of my time this week has centred around working with the Chief Minister and his Ministers on what’s needed to save the 2017 tourist season. It’s a race against time but if anybody can win that race Anguilla can! Think where we were six weeks ago. But, we also need to keep looking ahead; 2017 and 2018 will not necessarily be the years we had expected. But I’ll be working hard here and with the UK to make the most difference we can.”

The Governor said that one of the highlights recently was presenting a birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen to Comita Hughes who celebrated her 100th birthday. He and his wife Dina presented the card and they were interested to hear some of the fascinating tales from Anguilla’s past that Comita had to tell.
