Governor General Cup Caribbean Air Rally goes off without a hitch

Commissioner Derrick Simmons Jr. pauses with NuStar School pupils and teachers outside the piper aircraft at the F.D. Roosevelt airport in St. Eustatius.

ST. EUSTATIUS--For the past three years the Governor General Cup Caribbean Air Rally has been coming to the island of St. Eustatius and this year’s event went as smoothly as could be.

Although more aircraft were involved in 2016, this year saw a helicopter as part of the fleet and more female pilots at the controls. Pupils from the various primary schools on the island visited the aircraft. Many of them were fascinated with the planes as they posed question after question to the Captains.

Director of the St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation Charles Lindo and his team, along with Commissioner of Tourism Derrick Simmons Jr. were on hand to welcome the visiting group. An official welcome dinner was held for them at the Ocean View Terrace officiated by Commissioner Simmons Jr.

There were organised activities for the group while they were on the island such as hiking the National Park “The Quill,” snorkelling in the ocean or just diving. An enjoyable evening was had on the beachfront where a barbecue dinner was held for the visiting group. Many persons came out to see the group off when they left en route to St. Croix, USVI.
