PHILIPSBURG--Minister of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructure VROMI Miklos Giterson has appealed last week’s judge’s ruling that found it proven that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol during a car accident on L.B. Scott Road at approximately 5:45am September 6, 2018.
The judge agreed with the Prosecutor’s Office that Giterson must pay fines for violating Article 5 and 6 of the Road Traffic Regulation. Article 5 concerns the offence of dangerous driving and demands a fine of NAf. 300. Article 6 concerns the offence of driving under the influence and demands a fine of NAf. 1,500 and a conditional 6 months driving prohibition.
Giterson said on Wednesday during the live Council of Ministers press briefing that he would not make a statement about the conviction, as the court case is still ongoing.
“I want to make a statement, but my lawyers have advised against this,” said Giterson during the question and answer session.
“According to reports, MR-6 rear-ended the bus while travelling in the same direction,” police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson had stated in a press release in September. “There were five passengers in the bus at the time of the accident. Passengers who were injured in the collision were transported to St. Maarten Medical Center.” According to the information made available by the hospital, all had been released after examination.
No date has been announced for the appeal hearing.
