The wrecks removal programme on St. Eustatius has entered its second phase. All vehicular wrecks will be collected and taken to a salvage yard to be stripped and prepared for shipment.
It is estimated that more than 900 abandoned vehicular wrecks were scattered across the island. In the first phase from December 9 to 11, some 300 wrecks and tires, mainly from the Man-O-War Industrial Zone, were loaded on a barge and shipped via St. Maarten to the Netherlands where components will be processed for reuse. The third and final phase will be executed in the third quarter of 2019. It will entail collection and removal of the remaining metal waste from the island. The tender process for this phase will be opened in the second quarter of 2019. The public is advised by government that all end-of-life vehicles must be taken to the Waste Management Facility. Information regarding the classification of wrecks, legislation and collection processes will be conveyed via government information channels. The Directorate of Economy and Infrastructure and the Legal Affairs Department will be available to residents for any clarification about the ordinance.
