First Herring in Statia

Patrons of the Yummy Tummy Restaurant recently celebrated the arrival of the “new herring,” –

Dutch tradition of eating raw fish when the first batch of herrings is caught. Traditionally, the fish are served with raw onion to bring out the flavour of the herring and eaten by holding the fish by its tail and lowering it into the mouth. Iris Liu, owner of Yummy Tummy, said the tradition of eating new herring has proved popular with her customers. “They told me that this year the herring is particularly fat and succulent,” she said.
