Fire ravages two houses in St. James

MARIGOT--An accidental fire completely destroyed a house in St. James and an adjoining house was badly burnt early Saturday morning, the Gendarmerie confirmed.

According to the Gendarmerie, the fire started around 7:45am up in the hill off Rue de Hollande and was caused by a lit candle in a bedroom. The male occupant of the dwelling managed to escape.

Territorial Councillor Louis Fleming who was on the scene said two houses were involved, one a wooden house and the other a concrete house owned by a family with children who are now displaced but staying with relatives. Occupants of both houses managed to get out safely.

“It was fortunate the wind was in a favourable direction otherwise more houses would have caught fire,” Fleming said.

No further details could be obtained from the Fire Brigade (pompiers) but it was understood the fire was extinguished by 10:00am.
