SIMPSON BAY--The Class of 2019 was determined to make its mark at Teen Times Prom Night and went all out to ensure it is remembered. Teen Times hosted its 23rd annual prom on Sunday night under the theme “Masquerade elegance” which featured extravagant prom arrivals by senior students of the various high schools in St. Maarten.
What was once dominated just by limousines and other luxury cars, arrival at Prom Night has evolved into an event in and of itself. On Sunday night, students rolled up in the customary luxury cars and vans, but these were accompanied by dancers, drummers, motorbikes, large African masks, paparazzi-style entourages and more.
Once students began to arrive at Lotus Night Club, their presentations held up traffic slightly, but drew the attention of several tourists who joined parents and friends as onlookers to the spectacle.
“The arrivals at Prom are now a big part of the event. We even give a small cash prize for it, so the students try to outdo each other every year. It is something to see, amazing,” Teen Times Coordinator Rochelayne Rommy-Richardson said.
While the spectacle was ongoing downstairs, many other senior students of the Class of 2019 were already partying upstairs in Lotus for their prom. Music was provided by Mixmaster Pauly for the first part of the evening until the prom’s official deejay, Cut Creator DJ Outkast, who has been the official prom deejay for well over a decade, arrived on a flight from a gig overseas. From then it was dancing and socialising for the students the entire night.
Teen Times selected its title holders for Prom Night 2019 near midnight. Armani France was named Prom King and the student with the best arrival at Prom. Dorothy James was named Prom Queen, Kyle Fleming was named Prom Prince, Craishauna Hendricks was Prom Princess, Patrick Salmon was named the Best-Dressed Guy and Giovanna Maietti was Best-Dressed Girl.
The awards were guided by MC King Rumer and presented by St. Maarten Senior Carnival Queen D’Shnay Mathew York. The prizes were all provided by TelEm Group of Companies, which donated smart phones and phone credit to the students.
“We had an amazing night again and it was all made possible by the students and their parents, who went all out for this Masquerade Prom. The masks were stunning and their attitudes were all positive. They really brought the prom spirit,” Rommy-Richardson said.
“We also couldn’t do it without the kind hospitality of Manny and Fred of Lotus Night Club, DJ Outkast of course, the generosity of Member of Parliament Frans Richardson and TelEm, Janique Coram and Tasana Aventurin and the company Just Creative, who handled our décor this year, and Bertaux ‘Mr. Rude’ Fleming for his dependable service.
“Lastly, to the members of Teen Times, this is a proud tradition for us, 23 years strong. I am very proud of all of them for maintaining a positive, clean fun event that St. Maarten can be proud of.”
