ANGUILLA--After a six week closure the Edison Hughes Library reopened its doors to the public last week. Although it was one of the few Government buildings that did not sustain major structural damage the lack of electricity and running water hindered an earlier opening.
Director of Library Services Bernard Wattley stated that due to some flooding on the ground floor the building received comprehensive industrial cleaning to eradicate any traces of mould and mildew prior to reopening. During the closure period the library suspended all fines for overdue books and in the interest of serving their patrons the librarian staff made an effort to fill book requests for patrons reaching out to them during the closure period.
The staff of three librarians noted that the library services are once again being used by students and the public. Nearly 4,500 people use the Library on a regular basis. The Library is currently hosting Information Technology classes for students from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School in the Computer Lab which has a capacity of 24 computers. Plans are underway to reopen the Saturday programmes for the primary school children and preteens in early November.
The staff’s message is “We are ready to serve the public!”
