PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Lions Club held a mural competition in January under the theme “The best me is Drug Free”. Participants were required to submit designs representing the theme.

Three St. Maarten Academy students received the top prizes: Winner Aquilla Pemberton of Form 3A3 (US $500), first runner-up Shaquila George of Form 2A4 ($300), and second runner-up Joediann Browne of Form 3A3 ($100).

Members of the Alpha Leo Club and other volunteers put in several hours working on the mural for two weeks. It is located in front of St. Maarten Academy, near the bus stop on L.B. Scott Road, and was completed on June 28.

Aquilla said it was her desire that her design serve as an inspiration to others. The work shows that “trials are inevitable, but triumphs are possible,” she said.
