Consumers Coalition soon to sell affordable produce to members

PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Consumers Coalition will be living up to its promise to help alleviate the burden on households by selling fruits, vegetables, provisions and other essentials to members of its affiliate organisations for 30 to 40 per cent of what it cost in supermarkets.

The intention is to not just provide persons with affordable healthy items, but to also prove that it is possible to sell these items at affordable prices.

The Coalition said at a press conference on Thursday that its initiative to provide members of affiliated organisations with affordable health, food and nutrition products and information is coming to fruition. A container with fruits, vegetables and provision will arrive in the country by the end of this month and will be part of a three-month pilot programme. The official kick-off of the programme will be on Saturday, August 31, from 10:00am to 6:00pm at the WIFOL building on the Walter Nisbeth Road (Pondfill). This will be the first opportunity for persons to purchase items.

The campaign will be executed with the assistance of other stakeholders who will provide information and free testing to the members of the affiliated organisations, who attend.

In the coming two weeks, co-coordinators of the Consumers Coalition will be engaged in a campaign to provide more details about the initiative.

Persons who are not members of an affiliated organisation will get the opportunity to sign up with one of the organisations to benefit from this programme.
