Civil servants will be equal to other workers under NHI

PHILIPSBURG--Civil Servants working for the Government of St. Maarten will be equal to all other workers in the country under the National Health Insurance (NHI), which is currently being worked on by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Affairs VSA for finalization by the end of this year.  Health Minister Emil Lee told reporters on Wednesday that Social Health Insurances SZV currently manages five different funds. The idea is for the five packages to be synchronized under one package under the NHI.

“Instead of maintaining five sets of books, maintain one set of books of which civil servants would be included,” Lee explained. Under this scenario, Government would become an employer just like every other employer on the island, and therefore civil servants would be employees just like every other employee on the island. Currently, civil servants have a different arrangement.
