PHILIPSBURG--Charlotte Brookson Academy (CBA) for the Performance Arts is still located at University of St. Martin (USM) despite being given up to December to find a new home.
When contacted on Tuesday for a comment about the relocation efforts, a CBA official said the board is expected to meet on the matter soon.
USM official Dr. Francio Guadeloupe had told The Daily Herald last year that the contract between CBA and USM ended last June and the tertiary institution had given CBA until December 2015 to find another suitable location.
CBA had been occupying classrooms at USM since it first opened its doors three years ago to provide education for students with a strong interest in the arts and with a strong focus on academics. A source close to CBA had told this newspaper last year that the intention was never for the school to be permanently housed at USM. The institution had been expecting to receive a plot of land measuring 5,000 square metres at Emilio Wilson Park, to construct a building to house its school.
Henri Brookson had intended to donate the land to the school which was named after his mother the late Charlotte Brookson. However, the former government at the time did not go along with this proposal, leaving no land for the institution. CBA occupies several rooms on the ground floor of USM, which are used for classrooms and several rooms on the upper floor which are used as administrative rooms.
Since the school was asked to move CBA has been looking for alternative accommodation elsewhere. The school would prefer to have its own land and build its own school.
