Carnival Village re-opens as smoke shifts direction

PHILIPSBURG--The fete must continue! Carnival Village booth-holders were given the all-clear to continue their operations Friday afternoon. The Fire Department had ordered the evacuation of the entire village because of heavy smoke clouds over the location at 2:10pm.

Dump fire 3St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation President Alston Lourens informed The Daily Herald that the Culture Night set for this evening at the Village will go on as scheduled. He also said the Village is open to visitors as booth-holders prepared their food and drinks.

The Fire Department, is advising persons living downwind from the landfill fire to close windows and doors, especially persons who have a respiratory challenge such as asthma or shortness of breath. The Fire Department is working on containing the fire at the landfill on Pond Island.
