Breast screening event at SMMC said to be success

Attendees registering for their screening

CAY HILL--More than 100 women attended the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) annual clinical breast screenings in collaboration with the Positive and Elektralyets Foundations on October 26.

SMMC stated in a press release on Tuesday that SMMC doctors, assisted by American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine student doctors, had screened a total of 111 women at the well-attended event.

The event featured lectures by radiologist Dr. Sander Bodewitz, who demonstrated a biopsy using fruit, and by chemotherapy Nurse Jasmien Cijntje, who spoke to attendees about life before, during, and after cancer diagnosis.

The Positive and Elektralyets Foundations were also on hand providing resources and vouchers for free mammograms for attendees who needed further examinations, but had no health insurance.

“SMMC thanks the attendees, the Positive and the Elektralyets Foundations, the student doctors from AUC, and their staff for their participation in this successful event and looks forward to welcoming them again next year,” SMMC concluded.
