PHILIPSBURG--D’Ante President (9) is the grand prize winner of Van Dorp’s first bookmark competition. His winning bookmark is themed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Winning consolation prizes are Bhavna Sakhrani (9) whose bookmark was themed “Charlotte’s Web,” Cato de Wilde (6) whose bookmark was themed “Reading is Fun,” and Aarushi Goklani (8) whose bookmark was themed “3D Sharks.”
Some of the other story themes sent into the competition included Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dagboek van een Creeper, Pete the Cat: Firefighter Peter and Curious George.
All winners received painting art set prizes. The four winning bookmarks will soon be available with the purchase of one children’s reading book at Van Dorp.
A total of 25 entries were submitted by young readers and avid artists ages 6-18 years.
The competition was launched on Monday, January 21, with the young readers being set a challenge to design a bookmark using the theme “My favourite book.” Entries were received for two age categories: 6-12 and 13-18. However, there were no entries from the category 13-18, which led to one overall winner and three consolation prizes.
“We thought this would be a creative way to promote reading. This is our first bookmark competition and we will host this contest yearly. It was an exciting experience to see all of the creative and unique entries and how they put all of their efforts into creating lovely pieces of artwork. In all, they are all winners, but we needed to choose one,” Van Dorp manager Lubi Carty said.
All of the entries were judged by local artist Ruby Bute at Silk Cotton Grove and Art Gallery on January 28.
