SABA--Sabans can get acquainted with biodegradable products at the Carnival Village next week, thanks to an initiative of the local government.
The public entity Saba has purchased several cases of biodegradable cups, food containers and straws. These products will be given to the booth-holders at the Carnival Village so they can use them to serve food and drinks during next week’s festivities.
Government decided to purchase the items as a way to introduce these to the general public and the booth-holders.
Biodegradable products will become the new future when Saba starts phasing out single-use plastic products in 2020, resulting in an ultimate ban of these items which cause littering and pollute the natural environment.
The public entity, represented by Island Governor Jonathan Johnson, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, represented by State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven, signed a declaration of intent on Monday, July 15, to start the phasing out single-use plastics next year.
The biodegradable products were ordered from PDG Restaurant Supplies in St. Maarten. This is the first time the public entity ordered these items as a try-out for the booth-holders and the general public.
The Carnival Village will open on Monday, July 22, for the entire week, up to the Second Day Parade, the Last Lap and the burning of Momo on Sunday, July 28.
