On-the-ground practice

Today’s story on Voice of the Youth’s rank promotion ceremony is encouraging. The foundation’s flagship programme, the St. Maarten Youth Brigade, proves that people still believe in the next generation and are willing to make an effort to help them reach their full potential.

In addition to developing physical and mental abilities, brigade members learn discipline, teamwork, obey rules and respect for authorities, all useful traits. Founder of the organisation, Zulayka Peterson, deserves credit for taking that first step, because the need for something like it was becoming increasingly clear at the time.

Her appeal to grant them access to a long-requested obstacle course should not go unheeded if at all feasible. The fact that such a facility could serve as a valuable resource for various law enforcement entities makes it seem even more of a worthwhile investment.

Thirteen years of service dedicated to youth development through discipline, mentorship, leadership and community engagement has no doubt made a positive difference. That built-up experience and knowledge could lead to other things as well.

For example, plans are being made for a military-style programme including vocational courses and job training, targeting young adults out of school and not at work. It would be similar to what they have in Curaçao and Aruba via their respective militias in cooperation with armed forces from the Netherlands stationed on the islands.

Relevant talks were already being held with the Defence Ministry in The Hague, among other things about a possible role for the Dutch Marines based in St. Maarten. Involving Voice of the Youth was mentioned, and with good reason. Local, on-the-ground practice can help ensure success.
