For their own good

The revelation by the Inspectorate of Health that labels of food products and beverages sold to the public are being tampered with (see related story) is a serious matter. Especially where it concerns the expiration date,

doing so is not only wrong but downright dangerous.

Moreover, the practice is a criminal offence. It also shows little regard for the very customers to whom the guilty merchants obviously owe their existence.

The release doesn’t mention specifics, but several cases had been reported in the past and there is even a fine of up to a million guilders. One would assume those responsible at least were given a stern warning. If it happens again they probably won’t be let off the hook easily either.

The advice for consumers to pay attention to the packaging of their groceries in general makes all the sense in the world. Even if a supermarket indicates that the item is close to expiring and therefore cheaper, it may not be offered past the “sell by” deadline under any circumstances. Ensuring the package has not been opened yet is also important, as is attentively reading the information printed on it.

Some may wonder why citizens have to be so careful and whether local authorities cannot just control the businesses involved better. They must realise that little St. Maarten has literally hundreds of supermarkets and convenience stores, so effectively checking all their shelves on a regular basis is practically impossible.

The local inspectors will continue to do what they can, but the public must also be more aware and notify the department of suspected violations, for both their own good and that of others. In the end, helping see to it that the laws of the land are respected is in the best interest of the entire community.
