Civilised behaviour

Today’s annual Simpson Bay Causeway Jump-Up signals the approach of the Dutch side’s Carnival period, which of course will really get going after Holy Week and Easter. The idea was developed when the road-bridge across the lagoon opened late

2013, primarily to give the “other side of Cole Bay Hill” a taste of the annual cultural celebrations that are concentrated in and around Philipsburg as well.

The chosen date obviously had to do with the end of the traditional high season for the island’s predominant tourism markets. This way, visitors escaping winter in North America and Europe, many of whom stay in that general area, are able to enjoy at least one of the dancing street parades.

In addition, it serves as a wake-up call to revellers and others involved in the annual festivities that the time to get ready is fast running out. The latter goes not only for participants, but also for organisers, emergency services, authorities, vendors, etc.

Everyone is invited to join the party, but please be responsible. Don’t overdo things, especially when it comes to alcohol-use, and always remain alert to your immediate surroundings.

Follow the instructions of authorities to avoid unnecessary problems, and show some patience, understanding and compassion when dealing with fellow human beings. After all, having fun can never be an excuse to abandon civilised behaviour.
